Ahead of the Belgian GP, Alex sat down to chat all things Spa, as he shares his thoughts on what makes the historic track so special and recaps his previous trips there...
What makes Spa special?
“Spa is one of the best circuits we go to. It has a really good flow, the undulations, the cambers on the track, even the curves that they use are really good for Formula 1 and for racing in general.
“The racing is great as well, and if you're quick, you can race and battle side-by-side.
“I would say it's definitely one of the favourites among drivers.”
What are the unique challenges of Spa?
“It's a different type of race because you end up not always driving your quickest race, but you make sure that you're quick in the right places.
“So, for example, saving the tyres in areas where you know other cars can't overtake you, to make sure that in the corners where you need the grip and you need to make that extra gap, you’ve got margin in the tyre to do that.
“Little things like that make a big difference. And just keeping a cool head - you often end up with a big train in your mirrors, which is not always that fun to see.
“Feeling like you can't make a mistake can pressure you into losing focus and actually cause those mistakes.
“So, you have to put that behind you and really just focus in front of you.”
Scoring points in 2022…
“2022 at Spa is a good memory. We had a great qualifying, it was definitely a circuit that suited us. I remember there was a lot of pressure on that race.
“We were really good into Turn 1, but I knew if I had one little slight mistake or if it was not optimal, I would never have had the chance to to keep my position.
“So, it made it that all driving needed to be super clean, not making mistakes and keeping the tyres alive, which isn’t that easy on that circuit. So, the stakes were high and that's why it felt like such a well executed race.”
Last time round at Spa…
“Last year, the whole weekend was tricky, and the race was just the same. We ran a low downforce setup, which was fun but really degraded the tyres in the second sector.
“I actually made a good start to the race, however I was just struggling so much with degradation I fell out of the points in the mid stint.
“I remember having to over-push the tyres to stay in front during sector two, but as soon as I tried to manage them, I was immediately under fire from cars behind, so it was a vicious cycle.”
