The summer shutdown is upon us, but what exactly is Formula 1’s mid-season hiatus? We explain why Alex and co are taking a break over the coming weeks...
How long is the summer shutdown?
Sunday’s trip to Spa was the 14th race of an enthralling 2024 campaign — but there won’t be another grand prix until we visit the Netherlands on 23rd-25th August. That’s a gap of 25 days before Albono heads to the Circuit Zandvoort next month. Work at Grove only needs to pause for two weeks during that period, however.
What are the rules?
Formula 1 teams must completely cease work during the aforementioned fortnight, with the exception of tasks that don’t have an impact on the cars themselves. So while marketing and finance departments are able to continue working, drivers, mechanics and engineers cannot remain operational.
Are there any exceptions?
Yes, there are certain activities that can be carried out with written FIA permission, such as repairs on cars that were seriously damaged in Round 14.
Why is there a break?
The summer shutdown is designed to give Formula 1 staff an opportunity to relax mid-season — and ensures that all teams are equal when it comes to taking downtime.
Looking ahead…
There is certainly plenty to look forward to, once we return to action. The Dutch Grand Prix will be quickly followed by visits to Monza, Azerbaijan and Singapore, so there should be plenty of opportunities for Alex to add to his points tally in the coming months.
