The longest Formula 1 season in history has finally come to an end, and after 24 races you could be forgiven for forgetting some of the details – so allow us to take you back in time as we reflect on some of the standout moments from Alex’s year.
Getting Started – On A Saturday
The 2024 season got going back in February, when, after a weekend of testing, the teams took to the track on a Thursday in Bahrain for the first official session of the year.
That weekend – and the following one in Saudi Arabia – had the distinction of being run on a Thursday-Saturday schedule rather than the usual Friday-Sunday format due to the start of Ramadan.
Alex started well, and was only a tenth of a second away from making Q3 in the very first Qualifying session of the year. The season was underway.
Magic in Monaco
There are few better places to score a good result than Monaco.
It was during Round 8, and a visit to The Principality, that Alex had his best weekend of the first part of the season. A stunning 1:10.948 in Qualifying was enough to secure 9th on the grid, and Alex defended that position on race day, taking two points home – not that home was too far away!
A Montreal Masterclass
Alex’s superb qualifying form was on show again in Canada this year, as he made it into the top ten shootout once again.
The real spectacle came on the Sunday, however, when Alex pulled off one of the best overtakes in Formula 1 history.
After a wet start to the race, the safety car made an appearance midway through the race – but on the restart, in uncertain conditions, Alex made a daring move into the final chicance.
The No.23 overtook both Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon in a stunning display of skill and nerve, and gave the watching fans a moment they won’t forget in a hurry!
A Silverstone Special
Alex continued to show his talent in wet conditions with another points finish at Silverstone – an extra special result given its home race status for the Williams team.
After qualifying P9, Alex yet again defended that position – despite all manner of hurdles – to claim another two points, ensuring some great scenes at the chequered flag.
“I just had to stay patient and wait for the opportunities to arise,” Albono commented, reflecting on yet another superb result.
More Points in Monza
There’s a theme developing here! Alex once again qualified P9 at the Temple of Speed, and once again brought it home for another two points.
This time, though, it was a dry race – and Alex needed to use all his craft and finesse to keep Kevin Magnussen behind him as he crossed the line. The best, however, was yet to come…
The Best in Baku
Yet another appearance in Q3 meant it was another top-ten start for Albono in the very next race, as the F1 circus arrived in Azerbaijan.
Albono received a bump up to P9 after penalties above him before the race had even begun – clearly a favourite grid spot for him this year – and defended that position through the opening laps.
Alex, starting on the hard tyres, rose as high as P3 at one point, as those around him boxed earlier to remove the mediums, and managed to keep Lando in the McLaren behind him for an extended spell.
He emerged behind teammate Franco and Nico Hulkenberg, but showed great racemanship to pass both on track in quick succession, rising to P9.
A late crash further ahead then promoted our man to P7, and his highest finish of the season.
It was a great day for Alex and the team, and as his focus switches now to 2025, he’ll be looking for plenty more when F1 makes its return in March…
