The long summer break without F1 is coming to an end: It’s race week once again, and we’re in the Netherlands!
A return to Zandvoort marks the first half of an all-European double-header that will finish at the iconic Italian Grand Prix next weekend – but these two circuits don’t otherwise have a whole lot in common.
Circuit Zandvoort is a narrow, undulating track that places a lot of emphasis on high-downforce setups, while Monza is famous as the Temple of Speed, with its long straights regularly hosting the fastest Grand Prix of the year.
Last year’s visit to the North Sea coast saw Alex take a hugely impressive P4 in Qualifying, to match his best ever career grid position, before a manic race on Sunday saw rain clouds arrive just as the lights went out, forcing many into very early tyre changes.
Zandvoort presents a rollercoaster of challenges – most pointedly thanks to the prominent cornering inclines, including the 18-degrees of banking in Turn 3.
The final corner is a sweeping right-hander that hosts the start of the main straight’s DRS zone. It’s that DRS zone that means the best overtaking opportunities will arrive in the Turn 1 braking zone, on a circuit that is not typically generous with such chances.
Circuit Zandvoort stands at 4.2 kilometres in length, and with 72 laps in the offing and changeable weather in the forecast, we could be treated to another dramatic spectacle on the banks of the North Sea. Fingers crossed for car number 23!
