Alex will be delighted with the opening two rounds of 2025, having made his best start to a season since stepping up to Formula 1. Our Thai racer already has P5 and P7 finishes to his name this term, following successful stints in Australia and China. And he’ll be looking to maintain that impressive form over the coming weeks, with trips to Japan, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia on the cards, before the action switches stateside for the Miami GP in May.
With a weekend off before the campaign’s next race, now feels like the perfect time to reflect on two successful Grands Prix for AA23…
Setting standards in Melbourne
At the season opener in Melbourne, Alex immediately set high standards for the year ahead by finishing fifth — his best result with Atlassian Williams Racing to date. Battling changeable and challenging conditions, Albono and the team adeptly managed his tyre strategy to secure an impressive placing at the Albert Park Circuit. Alex’s assessment of the day reflected his delight at the positive outcome:
“I am very happy,” he said. “Honestly, when you feel like the car’s good and you feel like you’re driving well, you just feel like you’ve got it covered, in a weird way. We’ve had these races before, and I knew that as a team we are good in these ‘random’ races — we get our elbows out.”
Maintaining form in Shanghai
Building on that morale-boosting result in Melbourne, Albono then secured a seventh-place finish at the Chinese Grand Prix. Starting from tenth on the grid, he showcased his confidence and delivered a strong drive — utilising a one-stop strategy to put six more points on the board.
“Considering the Sprint race [when Alex placed P11], today was a huge step for us and it shows the progress we’ve made as a team,” he explained on Sunday. It shows us that we can fix issues that we have on our car, which is a huge improvement on where we were last year.”
Those consecutive top-ten finishes have propelled Alex to sixth in the Drivers' Championship standings with a total of 16 points — reflecting his consistent performances and Atlassian Williams Racing’s ambitions to compete at the highest level. After the opening two weekends of last season, Alex had P15 and P11 placings to his name, so he will no doubt be over the moon with the progress he’s made in such a short timeframe.
How far can Alex go in 2025?
With a weekend away from the paddock now, Albono’s sights will be firmly set on the Japanese Grand Prix on 6th April, where he will hope to replicate his eye-catching form of late. The 29-year-old hasn’t had the best of luck at the Suzuka Circuit in years gone by, however. Following a P4 with Red Bull Racing back in 2019, Alex is yet to finish a race at the track in three attempts with Williams.
He will no doubt be desperate to re-write the script early next month, then. The following race in Bahrain has been much kinder to AA23 in years gone by, though, with three points returns across three different racing outfits. And with confidence high, it would be unwise to bet against Albono continuing his hot streak into Rounds 3, 4 and beyond this season.
