2017: A solid introduction
Alex made his F2 debut in 2017 with ART Grand Prix, partnering with fellow driver Nobuharu Matsushita.
He demonstrated a degree of consistency by scoring points in the first six races, before a brief hiatus due to health issues.
Our Thai racer made quite an impression on his return to action at the Red Bull Ring, though, securing a podium finish in the weekend’s second race.
There was more to come, too, when Alex wrapped up the season at Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina Circuit with a second place finish. The youngster led for the majority of the race before being overtaken by Charles Leclerc on the final lap.
He finished the campaign 10th in the standings, laying a strong foundation for the following year.
2018: A breakthrough year
The 2018 season with DAMS saw Alex burst onto the scene in style.
He qualified in pole position on three occasions and secured an eye-catching four race victories — resulting in a third-place finish in the championship standings.
His first win in F2 came at the challenging Baku City Circuit. Starting first on the grid, he navigated the tight street circuit with precision, fending off competitors to claim a commanding win.
Albono then delivered a masterclass at Silverstone in Round 13, showcasing his technical brilliance and raw speed to secure a memorable win in front of the British crowd.
Then, at the Hungaroring, Alex excelled in the sprint race — propelling him to another well-deserved triumph.
He concluded the season with a fourth victory, winning the feature race at Sochi and showcasing his adaptability across different circuits.
Throughout the 2018 season, the up-and-coming racer was a formidable contender for the championship, facing off in intense battles with other future stars like George Russell and Lando Norris.
His consistent podium finishes kept him in the race until the season's end, as he went on to be one of the standout drivers of the series.
Legacy and progression to Formula 1
Alex’s impressive performances in Formula 2 did not go unnoticed.
His success led to a seat with Toro Rosso in Formula 1 for the 2019 season, marking the beginning of his career at the pinnacle of motorsport.
Now heading into his sixth F1 campaign, Albono will be looking to continue progressing with Williams Racing in 2025 and beyond.
